  1. You should have included a picture of the first self service food operation in the UK at the then London Co-op’s (now co-op Group) Romford Department store, in 1942. Also a picture of the first free standing Supermarket in the UK opened by the Portsea Island mutual Co-op Soc. ( Now called the Southern Co-operative Soc) in Albert rd Portsmouth. It opened in march 1948. People came from all round the world to visit it. It was not until two years later that Sainsbury’s opened their first supermarket in 1950, by the time they opened their second supermarket in 1952 PIMCo had converted 40+ branches to supermarkets and there were about 900 Co-op supermarkets Nationally. The lie that Sainsburys opened the first supermarket in the UK often appears in the press, the facts can be found in their own publication ‘ Sainsburys 1869 to 1969’
