What is Fairtrade?

We love Fairtrade at the Co-op – perfectly illustrating our commitment and desire to champion a better way of doing business for you and your communities!

The meaning of Fairtrade is encapsulated in the name: FAIR – farmers and producers get a better deal for their products and TRADE – they get improved, long-term deals allowing them to plan and invest in the future of their local communities.

Fairtrade offers consumers a powerful way to reduce poverty around the world through their everyday shopping. All aspects of the process are designed to address the imbalance of power in trading relationships, unstable markets and the injustices of conventional trade. Ed Robinson, our Fairtrade wine buyer, helps the producers get the best quality wine they can from their vineyards, he then ensures the wines are shipped to us in the most cost effective way and finally he makes sure those wines are the best value on shelves! There you go, it’s no secret anymore – Fairtrade wines offer brilliant ‘bang for your pound’ and you help make the world a better place!

This video by the fabulous wine writer Amanda Barnes shows just one of the ways Fairtrade wine makes a difference  explaining more .

Amanda has also written about a guest blog about the importance of Fairtrade following a visit to South Africa in 2015.
