This year you’ll find something spooky hiding in the wine aisle of your local Co-op. Unearth our Ghoulish Greco which is perfect for Halloween parties or for enjoying in the dark while hiding from Trick-Or-Treaters!
It came from the cellar! Pale, white and haunting…Crypt-cold and chilling… seeking some food… but not garlic or steaks! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!
Our Truly Irresistible Gecula Wine is a 2014 Greco with a unique label representing the witchcraft and magic notorious with the region of Benevento where the wine is produced. Once known as the “city of witches”, Benevento is a province in the heart of southern Italy where the volcanic soils give this medium-bodied wine a big flavour with aromas of honey, lemon and spring meadows.
The Legend of The City Of Witches
The history of the Witches of Benevento dates back to the 13th century when it was known that the city was an Italian witches’ gathering place. Their gatherings took place under a sacred walnut tree which was once cut down in 1639 when Christian invaders renounced paganism from the city.
Legend has it that the tree was either restored by the devil or replanted by the witches.
Underneath the tree witches enjoyed banquets and danced with spirits and demons in the form of cats or goats. After the gatherings the witches spread horror and carried out pranks on the locals.
Wine Label Inspiration
Our Wine Buyer took inspiration from these tales of witchcraft along with the Greco grape, known locally as Grecula, and his love personal love of the Pink Panther opening titles to create the wine label. His aim was to create a label which resembled the story of the wine and was different to others on the shelf and we think he did exactly that!
With such a spooky tale behind the wine, you may want to think twice about enjoying it during a full moon…
