Here at the Co-op, we love Fairtrade and we love chocolate. Good-quality, ethically sourced chocolate. Which is why, in 2002, we became the first (and still only) UK retailer to switch our entire own-brand chocolate bar range to Fairtrade. Fast-forward to 2016 and we’ve done the same with our own-brand chocolate Easter eggs, which means you can treat family and friends safe in the knowledge that you’re also helping to support the farmers who grow the cocoa to produce them.
Why is Fairtrade important?
Many cocoa-farming communities are unable to access adequate education, healthcare or clean water, and families in extreme poverty face a continual struggle. But with the help of Fairtrade, the lives of farmers and their families can be transformed. Fairtrade aims to make their trade more sustainable, helping farmers build better lives for themselves, their families and communities by ensuring a fairer price for their crop. Farmer members also get involved in deciding how to invest Fairtrade income, which could mean building a new classroom or improved access to water.
So, by choosing Fairtrade this Easter, you’ll be helping to make a difference to our producers’ lives.
