This week Co-op Food opened it’s 100th new store this year. 100 new stores is more than we’ve ever opened before and more than any other UK food retailer in 2016.
Just under half of all the new food stores opened this year in the UK will be Co-ops.
Why are we investing in new convenience stores?
The answer is simple, because our members and customers are shopping that way. Research shows that half of Brits no longer do a big weekly shop and nearly a third of us decide what we’re going to have for dinner on the day itself, rather than planning in
Buying new stores in great locations is the right thing to do, both for our organisation and for our customers. Our new store programme is part of a wider food strategy which focusses on delivering a compelling and convenient shopping experience to millions of members and customers every day.
Creating a sense of community
The launch of our new membership scheme in September, which gives 5% to members and 1% for their local community, has provided a funding boost to community groups across the country. Since it’s launch over £1million has been donated to over 4,000 local causes.
The 100 new stores opened this year are now supporting 260 local causes.
Bringing 100 new stores to life
In November we opened our Mumbles store near Swansea. Located in an iconic building close to the sea it stocks a wide range of everyday essentials, as well as lots of fantastic products from local suppliers.
The 33 store colleagues, along with our members, will be supporting a local primary school association and a local play association through our Local Community Fund.
“It’s a very impressive new store which will be of great benefit to Mumbles. The development is extremely important for the area, not only for residents, but for holidaymakers too. It will have a positive knock-on effect on other businesses in the town.”Mumbles Councillor, Tony Colburn.
We’re always on the look out for new locations to open stores and Co-op members can suggest a site. As a Co-op member, if your suggestion is successful you’ll receive £500 in Co-op gift vouchers.
