Richard Pennycook, Co-op Chief Executive, has written the following end of year message for colleagues:

What an incredible year we’ve had.

We’ve re-invented Co-op Membership. We’ve brought back our iconic Co-op look.  We’ve gone Back to Being Co-op. And we’ve campaigned to tackle loneliness.

By Christmas we expect to have given £15m back to our members and their communities through the 5% and 1% rewards. There’s also £3.5m going to our local causes through the carrier bag charge. Meanwhile, you’ve raised £4m for our work on loneliness with the British Red Cross. So you can see that we’re keeping our promise to be a better way of doing business for you and your community.

Feeling good

We’ve just had the results from the 2016 TalkBack. Thank you to all of you who took part in the survey. The massive response rate of 82% gives us a reliable indication of how you’re feeling about working for the Co-op.

After such a positive year we hoped to see an uplift in our overall engagement score and that’s exactly what’s happened. The Co-op wide engagement score is 78%, which is four points higher than last year.

For those colleagues who attended one of our Back to Being Co-op events, the engagement score was even better at 80%. And, colleagues now feel more able to play an active role in the community (+11% since 2015).

But before we get carried away, one number is less encouraging. Only 68% of colleagues believe action will be taken from this survey. So in late January, you’ll receive your team results reports and action planning tools; plan to spend time as a team openly talking about the results and think about how to work together to take meaningful action on your feedback.

What’s ahead for our Co-op?

We’ve set ourselves the target of recruiting a million new members in 2017 and we want half of them to be brand new Co-op shoppers. I’ll have more to say about our ‘Join Us’ campaign in the New Year.

In these last few days of 2016 there’s still much work to do especially for our Food colleagues. We have a fantastic Christmas offer, Irresistible in fact, and we’re set up for some great end of year trading. My special thanks and good wishes to everyone working in Food at this time of year in stores, logistics and the Support Centre.

And finally, thank you to everyone for the part you’ve played in making this an historic year for our Co-op. We are well and truly ‘back’. As the year ends, I hope you can relax and enjoy the time with your friends and family.

Here’s a short video to remind us just how busy we’ve been in 2016.

Richard
