We’re Kernow Chocolate, a chocolate manufacturer near Padstow now stocked in 40 Co-op stores across Cornwall. Co-op’s supporting local suppliers with their Small Business Charter, and we’re one of them.
We’re family-run and make all of our small batch chocolate in St. Eval by hand.
It all started in 2005 when we set about making a range of products to sell in our Cornish food & drink shop, ‘Kernow Harvest’ which was based in Wadebridge before it closed in 2012. My wife Jayne and I went into business with our daughter Nicola and her husband Andy, who had both recently moved back to Cornwall having given up life in the city. The business grew again when our son Philip and his partner Vicki returned from working in Australia to join us in 2006.
We started selling our chocolate alongside fudge which was made by our close friends Buttermilk Confections, at farmers’ markets and local food & drink shows. We picked up accounts with local farm shops and deli’s along the way. In 2007 we introduced bespoke branded bar wrappers to sell into local attractions in Cornwall.
Now, fast forward to 2017 and we’re supplying Co-op too. Being stocked by Co-op is very exciting news, we’re absolutely delighted. To reach more local communities is a great opportunity to build awareness of our brand and open up new markets for our business across the region.
