Active & in Touch are based in Frome, Somerset and are a befriending volunteer scheme, supporting lonely and isolated people. This local cause tackle loneliness with weekly socials and connect people with hairdressers, medical staff and opticians when they need it.

I chose Active & in Touch as my local cause for 2017. They benefited from mine and other Co-op Members’ support as part of the Local Community Fund, last year.

“The Co-op Local Community Fund helped to recruit, induct and train more volunteers so we can continue to reach out to more lonely, vulnerable and elderly people in the community. We now have nearly 70 active volunteer befrienders working in and around Frome helping those in need. In the future we plan to organise more events and activities around the town and local villages to highlight the issue of loneliness.” Lucia, Active & in Touch

“The trouble with loneliness is that you can start withdrawing more and more. This project is just so simple and easy, it’s just about being alongside people, like being a good neighbour. We feel it is important to provide opportunities for people who may be struggling with feelings of isolation and loneliness to meet with others and help them to feel part of the community around them.” Lucia, Active & in Touch

I chose this cause to support because it’s about bringing people together who maybe feel a bit isolated. I think there’s a lot of that hidden in our communities and we need to find ways to support those who feel like this.

It’s brilliant to see that something like this is going on in your own community. Your Membership card does so much for your community for so little.

Did you know that as a member, when you buy selected Co-op branded products and services from selected Co-op Group businesses, 1% goes to your local community cause? You also get 5% back on your Membership card to spend at Co-op.

  1. I enjoy shopping at the Co-op but would be far happier if they supported more causes in England. There are so many homeless outside their shops for starters. Please spend more money here in England looking after our own people. The immoral foreign aid budget continues to escalate and give to countries that spend that money on space programmes not on the poor and needy!
