We’re investing over £160 million in Co-op Food stores

This year, we’re investing over £160 million in 100 new stores and 150 refits. Our new stores will create around 1,600 new jobs for local people and will offer delicious food, around the corner from where our customers and members live and work.
100 new Co-op Food stores a year
We’ve opened 100 stores each year for the last three years because as the convenience grocery market continues to grow, we’ll grow with it.
2018 has been the strongest year for Co-op properties, with 53 new stores now open and serving their communities so far. And although we’ve got big plans for the whole country, London and the South East are our biggest focus areas, with around a quarter of the stores we’ve opened so far located in the capital.
Our property gems
Our property team manages over 6,000 properties across the country – from stores and Funeral Homes to flats and offices – and Co-ops can be found in all sorts of different buildings, both old and new.
We’ve scoured social media and found some great posts of Co-ops across the country, here are a just a few.
Clarence Street, York
Our Clarence Street store in York is housed in a derelict chapel. We retained many of the existing features, including the original iron columns. Clarence Street’s Co-op was opened by the member who suggested the location to us.
Union Street, Glasgow
Union Street’s Co-op sits proudly at the bottom of the Grade I listed Ca’ D’Oro building in central Glasgow. Built in 1872, the design is said to be based on the famous Venetian building of the same name.
1 Angel Square, Manchester
Our Manchester support centre, 1 Angel Square, is one of the most sustainable office buildings in Europe.
Toad Lane, Rochdale
You can’t talk about Co-op buildings without talking about Toad Lane in Rochdale. It’s the site of the first ever Co-op shop which was opened by the Rochdale Pioneers back in 1844.
Mumbles, Swansea
Mumbles’ Co-op was a derelict cinema before we redeveloped it. We gave the art deco building a new lease of life, much to the delight of screenwriter and producer, Russell T Davies.
Horbury, Wakefield
Horbury’s Co-op is one of our oldest stores. It was recently part of a new trial to see how we can make some of our bigger stores work better for members and customers. It’s great to see some of our old stores playing such a big part in our future.

The store is planned to open on the 29/11 but it’s very possible that this could change. We are working very hard to speed things up. Hopefully everything goes well. ^Jordan

My local Coop is Headley Road, Grayshott, Hampshire, it’s just a small one but is lovely to visit – a real tonic. The staff without exception are extremely welcoming, helpful and friendly. However, they really are working under adverse conditions as there is often something ‘breaking down’, such as the heating or freezers and they do seem to be very short staffed. It would be good to hear that the Grayshott Co-op is to get a make over, it would certainly benefit the staff and, indeed, customers. It is in a perfect position right in the main square of the village.

Hi I think I’ve found a good place to open a new store . Being on the A5 between Atherstone and Grendon 2 pubs shut down with parking 1 maybe be perfect and being a busy road may get a lot of business . So if anyone can help . I do work at Coventry NDC

Thanks to the co-op for supporting Good Morning Ballycastle. The monies is being and will be used to bring elderly and vulnerable senior citizens in the area together to enjoy friendship. We are arranging a Christmas lunch this year for 4 December. The co op monies will help towards making around 70 elderly people happy.

The south east of where and which capital ? The U.K. has four nations with four capitals and London is one of those.

Good on you COOP for giving overlooked buildings a useful makeover, helping to preserve or revive communities. Also great to see the village shop becoming a focal point in villages like Upchurch, near Sittingbourne, where there is a well-defined store and a cash point. Hooray!
