The Government’s loneliness strategy is an important milestone
237 words approx. 1 minute to read
After four years of campaigning to tackle loneliness, we welcome the Government’s strategy for England as another important milestone in tackling the issue.
Through our research with the British Red Cross we know that over 9 million people are always or often lonely. It’s a pervasive issue that does not discriminate – it can affect anyone of any age – it’s not the preserve of the old.
- Loneliness costs UK employers £2.5bn a year
- “I never knew it affected young people until it affected me”
Our Co-op has been #TacklingLoneliness for 4 years
One of the ways we responded to the findings was Co-op colleagues and members raising £6.7m to develop the Community Connector service which has already helped 3,000 people across the UK.
Through the Loneliness Action Group we’re also calling on organisations to work in partnership to help tackle loneliness.
In addition to this our Co-op Foundation is tackling youth loneliness through its UK-wide Belong network. Belong will directly improve the lives of more than 5,000 young people, as well as strengthen local youth services and break down the stigma around loneliness.
And as a Co-op Member, you can help the Co-op Foundation do even more to tackle loneliness every time you shop by choosing its ‘Belong’ network as your local cause. You can also donate or raise funds online.

You are missing an important concern. Loneliness is often caused by the fact that rural buses are inadequate. If you concentrated on buses there could be less lonely older people. If reasonably mobile and used a bus pass it would be possible to get on a bus to visit friends and family, shopping or just to go for a bus ride. Philomena Leech Member Rudgwick
