Over 10,000 Co-op Members have joined in #TheCoopWay to create the first ever member-designed pizza which will hit shelves in 2019. Earlier this year members told us about their favourite ever pizzas, put forward ideas for new recipes and told us which of the two shortlisted pizzas they preferred.

We can now reveal the winning pizza is Co-op’s Irresistible Salsiccia and Broccoli pizza.

The winner: Co-op’s Irresistible Salsiccia and Broccoli pizza

This mouthwatering meat and veg fusion is inspired by Lynne Dowdeswell, a Co-op Member from London. The pizza will feature Co-op’s signature sourdough base and tomato sauce and will be topped with Italian-inspired crumbled fennel sausage, charred tenderstem broccoli, mozzarella and slices of fresh chilli.

“I love food and spend a lot of time thinking about it. So when I was asked what I would put on a Co-op pizza I jumped at the chance to suggest a flavour combination that I think works really well. I’m really glad that Co-op members have decided that my pizza sounded tasty enough for them to choose it. I can’t wait to see the pizza in store and I especially can’t wait to eat it!” Lynne Dowdeswell, Co-op Member

Two pizza ideas made our final shortlist, from the thousands suggested by members and it was Lynne’s recipe that narrowly edged it as the pizza favoured by Co-op Members.

“Love love love it! Classic Italian flavours.” Kate Mansell, Cardiff

“Sounds amazing and mouthwatering. Would buy that now if I could.” Keith Brownless, Fife

The runner up: Gorgonzola, Pear and Prosciutto pizza

The runner up shortlisted recipe, a gorgonzola, pear and prosciutto pizza, had been inspired by ideas from Melinda Szocs, a Co-op Member from Bristol and David Hughes, a Co-op Member from Maidenhead.

“Love this – fruit and prosciutto are a match made in heaven and the Gorgonzola enhances the pear. My mother would have loved this and she was a typical Italian mama and her day revolved around cooking.” Co-op Member, Neith

What’s next for our member-designed pizza

We’ll be working hard over the coming months to get the recipe just right for the new member-designed Irresistible Salsiccia and Broccoli pizza. And because the vote was so close we’re also going to explore whether the gorgonzola and pear pizza could also work in our range.

I’d like to thank all the members who joined in #TheCoopWay to help create the first ever member-designed pizza.

  1. Hi there, all Co-op Members are welcome to join in #TheCoopWay and help shape products and services. In this specific instance, a viable vegetarian option wasn’t suggested by Co-op Members. When we designed our first-ever Member-designed wine, that was vegan. ^Jordan

    • Hello, I am sure that lots of Co-op members like myself suggested vegetarian options. I would be interested to hear why these weren’t viable and what WOULD be a viable vegetarian topping? If we know what would be viable then maybe we can make better suggestions if we have another chance in the future. It’s really good to hear that the first Co-op member designed wine was vegan but that’s not much use if you have gone to your local Co-oo in the hope of buying a vegetarian or vegan pizza!

  2. Like other users who have already commented, I am extremely disappointed that the winner is yet another meaty pizza. There was not even a vegetarian option in the finalists! With so many delicious vegetarian toppings available it is bizzare that you can not manage to produce one without having to squeeze in a bit of carcass somewhere! There is already an excellent selection of pizzas available for meat eaters and hardly any choice at all for vegetarians. As a vegetarian, although not vegan, I would be very happy to see a vegan pizza on the shelves and would definitely choose to buy that over a margherita dripping with dubious non organic cheese!

  8. Disappointing range of vegetarian and vegan pizzas in Coop, especially the smaller shops. Time you woke up to climate change, animal welfare and healthy eating!

  9. Well, I don’t normally respond to things like this but I will add my name to the list asking for VEGAN
products on the shelves and a VEGAN pizza in particular.

  10. Far too fussy. The best pizzas are from Naples where its the high quality of the fresh tomato that counts not all the daft toppings. Less is more.

  11. I’d like to see a veggie pizza. And not one that involves goat’s cheese. Something simple like margarita with mushrooms and black olives would be great. The small Coop stores could include a veggie friendly option … even a cheese pasty would be appreciated amongst the range of meaty pies, pasties, pork pies, and sausage rolls!

  12. I’m not a pizza lover per se but on occasion when my son drops in I buy them for him. I like veggie but he eats meat so finding one to suit both of us is the task. At least the coop have the variety to choose from and fresh produce to add to a veggie pizza for my son

  13. These pizzas are no good to me! Would love to see a vegan choice so I’m feeling very disappointed. There are plenty of pizza choices for meat eaters already.
I notice that when I go to any buffet parties which include vegan & vegetarian choices, the meat eaters always eat these first so we vegans are left with nothing.😢😢

  15. disappointed that a vegan pizza is not being developed, there are already plenty of choices for meat eaters! Goodfellas have a vegan pizza which was good but no longer stocked. Perhaps if there was a Co op version it might actually be in stock regularly. Cauldron block tofu seems to have been removed from stock. Replaced by various Quorn products, not all vegans want to eat processed foods.

    • I agree! Veganism is massively on the rise and Co-op should keep up with this 🙂 A vegan pizza made with caramelised onion and butternut squash is to die for 🙂

      • I was going to post the same – by now Co-Op might be the only shop that doesn’t offer Vegan Pizza :((( I’m a massive fan of Co-Op but as a vegan unfortunately can’t enjoy any of the pizza’s :(.
