Yourcafe, in Tang Hall, York, isn’t an ordinary cafe. Designed to reduce food waste and bringing people in the local community together, it’s run entirely by volunteers. Plus, we’re a Co-op Local Community Fund cause, meaning that when local Co-op Members buy selected Co-op products or services, they can donate 1% of their spend to causes like ours*. So, everyone wins.
A communal curry for the community
We recently welcomed the Co-op Food Magazine team to our cafe some of their favourite communal curry recipes and cooking tips with our volunteers. This was a great because our cafe runs on food donated by local businesses, so these tips will help us make sure the food donations go as far as possible.
Alongside offering hot meals on a “pay as you feel” basis – be that money, time or skills – we provide free food for our community to take home. This reduces waste again and even then, anything not taken away is given to a local school to hand out.
“I enjoy seeing the community coming together. It’s warm and relaxed here, and everyone looks forward to coming.” Stephen Calpin, YourCafe Volunteer
The delicious curries that we cooked with Co-op were a sweet potato and spinach curry and a vegan lentil kitchari. The dishes are so inclusive for vegetarian and vegan diets, plus communal cooking and eating.
If you’re a Co-op Member trying out these recipes, remember that when you buy Co-op products, you’ll be helping a community project like this ours.
