Every year, Co-op holds an Annual General Meeting (AGM) where eligible Co-op Members can cast their votes and find out the latest news. Held on 6 June 2020, it looked different this year because of lockdown. Tuning in from home, I was pleased to still have the chance to hear from Co-op. As a Member Pioneer, I’m proud of all we’ve achieved.

What a year it’s been…

Opening this year’s AGM, Chair of the Co-op Allan Leighton said: ‘The world is a very different place than it was 12 months ago. Our values and way of doing business have allowed us to go above and beyond in these incredible times.’

Bolstered by our strong performance in 2018, Chief Finance Officer, Shirine Khoury-Haq, was pleased to share that we had a good 2019 and have seen underlying profit before tax increase by 50% to £50m.

For more information on our business highlights, read our Co-op annual report.

The power of co-operation

Co-op Chief Executive Steve Murrells started this year’s presentations with a heartfelt thank you to colleagues.

Funeralcare teams have supported families around the UK, such as Jayne from our Blackpool branch. She arranged a funeral for a local entertainer and took him on a final journey leading to the working men’s club where he sang.

As a national retailer, we’ve played a critical role in feeding the nation. For example, colleagues in Socketts Heath delivered 800 bottles of water to Queen’s Hospital, Romford after their water fountains were turned off to prevent spreading the virus.

We offered 5,000 roles to people who suddenly found themselves out of a job. We’re rewarding frontline colleagues with a £150 bonus and an extra day’s holiday.

Caring for our communities in a crisis

Since the outbreak of coronavirus in the UK, we’ve responded in a truly Co-op way. Our initiatives have included:

  • Co-op Members’ Coronavirus Fund: we asked members to donate their unspent 5% rewards to local foodbanks, causes and funeral hardship funds.
  • We pledged £4m in food and advertising airtime to FareShare.
  • We launched our Co-operate platform to link communities and encourage co-operation.

Co-operating for a fairer world

To wrap up, Steve said: ‘We’ve shown what co-operation can do in a crisis. Now we need to show what it has to offer to the world when the crisis recedes.’

Our Co-op will play its part. We’re going to adapt, be ambitious and address challenges that people will continue to face.

It won’t be easy. You are already part of the future we need to create as we pull through this crisis – and look beyond it.

While this year’s AGM was definitely different, it brought us all together to champion a bigger cause: building on our success and keeping the momentum going.

The results are in…

Thanks to everyone who had their say.

  6. Our Co op has been great in the way they have giving they have handled their customers with curtesy and help. Especially to the older customers! Even to helping me across the car park one especially windy day as I walk with a stick! Their double queuing system was a godsend to the older people.
The only grumble for me is that our shop advertises Manx meat but they don’t sell Manx mince! Which I think every housewife uses every week!
They say they don’t have a mincer!! Help !!

  9. The staff at the Goffs Oak, Hertfordshire shop are very helpful, with the shop always in good condition and clean. In common with some general comments above, your supply chain could improve. Quite often, the store is a little short of a few lines..this is pre Covid-19. In general, the unit is well run, staff pleasant and I really like the way you help local clubs and library etc.
I always use the local shop whenever I can..prices are a little more than the larger stores, but for convenience, well worth it.
My only real grouse, is that the till areas were uprated about 18 months ago; I cannot belief the lack of space at the till for clients to easily pack their purchases and move away from the till to allow the cashier to call the next client. This whole area needs re working / redesigning. A small bench type area, behind or to the side of the till, like they have in a nearby Lidyl store, makes for an efficient pay and then pack area.
    Otherwise, well done!

  22. Reading Anna Hammond’s summary of the AGM gave me a reason to have a chuckle in the mid’s of my dreary lockdown existence. How on earth did Janyne from Blackpool with the help she gives to Funeralcare teams manage to arrange for the local entertainer to make his final journey to the local working men’s club and then get him to sing – amazing! I must make contact with Jayne and see if I can book her for my swansong.

  23. Hi Ken. I’m sorry to read that you have been dissatisfied with the levels of stock in your local store. Some of our stores are busier than others and replenishing stock whist the store is open and trying to maintain social distancing can be challenging. We are working on it. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Thanks. ^Karen

  25. Karin Whitfield Hi, I am so sorry you are being disturbed by deliveries at your local store. I have spoken to the team leader just now who has explained that normally they have restrictions in place so no deliveries before 8am and none after 6pm. These restrictions were lifted with the lockdown to ensure that adequate supplies were being delivered to store. She will speak to the manager tomorrow to see if these restrictions could maybe be put back in place. Fingers crossed. Thanks for letting us know. ^Andrea

  26. In out local Coop in Sandwich Kent , the coop have just stopped collecting food for the food bank in the town and sending the food to the next town over which is Deal Kent ! Why have they decide to do this there are still people who live in Sandwich who need help and are working, without the people who can’t work ? If these people need help why does the the Coop think the people who need help should go to Deal to pick up food from the food bank when they need help and don’t have enough money to live on as it is ? They’re I am sure is embarrassing enough answering for help as it is? Thank you if you can to answer this Question x

  28. The staff at the Co-op Wanstead E11 are brilliant; cheerful and unfailingly helpful. It is a pity that the Co-op’s logistics do not match the effectiveness of its front-line staff. Even now shelves remain in part empty or poorly stocked unlike the rest of the competition in the High Street who were pretty well back to normal 6-8 weeks ago. Neighbours who were regular customers have stopped going and I frequently have to shop elsewhere. As the Co-op is the largest grocer in the High street its performance is very disappointing.
