There’s no better time to shake up a cocktail (or mocktail!) than when it’s sunny outside. That first frosty sip of a drink on a hot day just can’t be beaten.

Simon Cairns, head of drinks at Co-op, shares what he’d recommend for drinking in the sun.

Quenching the nation’s thirst

My role at Co-op is to co-ordinate the drinks buying team, which I’ve been doing for seven years. I absolutely love playing my part in quenching the nation’s thirst!

The industry is constantly evolving as consumers’ tastes change, so it’s important for me and my team to develop and source products that satisfy the latest trends. I ensure that Co-op provides the most competent and convenient drinks range within the UK market.

At the moment, I’m really excited by the rise of online drinks delivery to our customers’ homes – a trend which I believe is here to stay.

Drinks for sunny days

I have a passion for wine, especially reds from the Rhône and whites from Italy. My current favourite bottle is our Co-op Orvietto Classico, which, at £6, is an absolute steal. For a truly summery drink, try using our Co-op South African Rosé to mix up our deliciously refreshing Strawberry frose.

There are some amazing flavoured gins available in our stores this summer crying out for some sunshine to make your socially distanced garden get-togethers the talk of your neighbourhood. Try our new Co-op Irresistible Passion Fruit, Mango & Lime Gin with ice and tonic – it will transport you to a tropical beach whilst you remain in the comfort of your own garden. Alternatively, you can’t just beat a classic Pimm’s and lemonade while dreaming of Wimbledon.

This summer, I’m looking forward to spending time outside with my kids. I’ve just invested in a wood-fired pizza oven, so I’m excited to try that out! A great drink to enjoy in the sun is this blueberry lemonade mocktail – it’s so fruity and refreshing.
