Food and fasting during Ramadan
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, beginning on the 12th April, when many Muslims across the world fast during daylight hours for 29-30 days. Muslims taking part in Ramadan do not eat or drink anything during daylight hours, eating one meal (the ‘suhoor’ or ‘sehri’) just before dawn and another (the ‘iftar’) after sunset. Ramadan traditionally culminates with friends and families uniting to celebrate Eid al-Fitr (‘The Festival of Breaking the Fast’).
Recipe ideas to cook during Ramadan
To me, Ramadan is a time for cooking and sharing fantastic food with loved ones. This year, even though there are still restrictions on who we’re able to see, I want to ensure my family and I make the effort, no matter what celebrations look like.
Even though we can’t have people round, that doesn’t mean we can’t mark the occasion with rich dishes. I don’t want simple curry and rice; I want sweet treats and platters with delicious food to share with the ones I love. From lentil fritters (dali bora) to a sweet and creamy rice pudding (kheer), these three recipes are some of my all-time favourites, and I hope you like them, too!
These lentil fritters are without a doubt one of the most consumed snacks during Ramadan in Bangladeshi households. They’re called fiyazi or fiyaza in Bengali and are ever so easy — all you need are five ingredients.
This recipe is a firm favourite among Bangladeshis. It is typically served during Ramadan with kisuri, which is a porridge-like soup made from rice.
This creamy dessert is made with basmati rice, milk, sugar and cardamom seeds. It’s deliciously rich and comforting. A small portion with Iftar will satisfy your sweet tooth!
