After the year we’ve had, there’s never been a more important time to support your community, and there are so many ways you can do it with Co-op! We’ve always put local communities at the heart of what we do. That’s why Co-op Members can select to support a local cause doing fantastic work in communities across the UK. Here’s how you can help others this year.
1. Raise funds for a local cause
One of the easiest things you can do to support communities is to become a Co-op Member. When you do, for every £1 you spend at Co-op, 2p goes to you and we’ll give the same to local communities. This is split equally between the Local Community Fund and the Community Partnerships Fund.
Through the Local Community Fund, members can select one of 4,500 local causes to support. Since 2016, our members have raised more than £70m for over 21,000 unique projects.
There are so many fantastic causes that are improving mental wellbeing, providing opportunities for young people and helping communities to access food. Plus, choosing who to support is entirely up to you!
Need help deciding? Check out some of these brilliant projects that need your support:
What’s the cause? Minds United Football Club CIC
What do they do? Provide weekly football sessions for adults with mental health problems, offering the opportunity to meet new people, stay active and connect with others.
What’s the cause? Afro-Brazilian Arts & Cultural Exchange Institute
What do they do? A project that uses art, music, dance and culture to encourage social integration and educational development for young people.
What’s the cause? The Community Cupboard
What do they do? A charityproviding food and grocery support to those who are temporarily unable to provide for themselves.
We’re also accepting applications for new projects to apply to the Local Community Fund from 4 May – spread the word and get involved if you know of a cause that needs support at this time.
2. Donate to Co-op’s Community Partnerships Fund
Along with supporting grassroots local community causes, you can also choose to donate your member rewards to Co-op’s Community Partnerships Fund. The initiative sees us partner with other like-minded organisations in order to create lasting change on issues we care about.
It’s all about a hand up, not a hand out – providing people with the skills, education and support systems that enable them to grow and build better lives for themselves. Whether it’s mental health support, better access to nutritious food, or improving opportunities for young people, our community partners are incredible organisations, doing great work. And you could be a part of that!

3. Get in touch with a Member Pioneer
Our Member Pioneers are community connectors on the ground in local communities around our food stores and funeral homes. They are passionate about their local communities and work hard to make a difference locally.
They bring together Co-op members, colleagues, local causes and other local groups to make communities a fairer place to work, play, live and learn.
If you’ve got any ideas on how Co-op could help your community, or want to know what Co-op is doing near you, then get in touch with your local Member Pioneer Co-ordinator and see what you can do together.
4. Promote your local group or activity on Co-operate
As lockdown ends and we get back to doing the things we love, it’s the perfect time to kickstart your group or activity and get more people involved.
Co-operate, our new online community centre, allows people who organise groups and activities in their community to promote them for free, and can help you find the volunteers and equipment you need to keep going.
Add your activity or group to Co-operate and spread the word!
