Co-op Member Alice sees her packaging idea arrive in store

We caught up with member, Alice Leuenberger, whose suggestion to replace plastic
with egg-box style packaging is now being used for products in Co-op stores across the UK.

More than 8,000 members joined in to share their ideas for plastic reduction. We shortlisted the best for a member vote, and Alice’s idea of using pulp packaging for fresh produce proved a popular winner.

Alice’s idea is now being put to good use in the packaging of our golden kiwis, ready-to-eat kiwis and pears, apples and organic avocado.

We invited Alice, from Andover, to visit us at our Support Centre in Manchester so she could see some packaging samples and hear from our team about how we’re putting her pulp packaging idea into practice.

It was great to meet such a passionate member and talk with her about some of the work we’re doing around packaging. We had an overwhelming response from
members on the issue of plastic reduction – it’s clearly something that they care deeply about. We’re actively working on a number of other member suggestions that came through from this Join In activity, and I hope to be able to update you more on these as things develop.

In the meantime, if you’re a Co-op member, sign in to your member account and take a look at the opportunities that are available to shape your Co-op right now.
