Thousands of members have joined in to help our wine team this year. Hear from wine buyer, Sarah Benson, on how Co-op has responded and as she shares some expert tips on the wines that will make your Christmas dinner even more special.
I’d like to raise a glass to all the members who worked together with my team to help us move forward a whole range of projects. From testing a pilot online wine community, to taking a new look at glass bottle design, feeding back on our Irresistible wine range, developing a new summer gin flavour, creating new labels for our Port and Vermouth and provide their food pairing suggestions, member involvement in 2019 has been incredible.
It’s been great to be working together with members in this way, and we’ve had a busy time, taking action on many of the suggestions they’ve made this year and in 2018.
So, we’ve introduced a white port in 400 stores along with our new Co-op Irresistible Sherry. These products were suggested by a number of members who joined a conversation about how we could improve our fortified wine range in late 2018. Our White Port is a fruity, but refreshing, option that can be drunk either chilled as an aperitif or with tonic as a great alternative to Gin.
You’ll also find our new look Vermouth labels that were developed together with members coming into store and a Fairtrade wine range that now uses much less glass in its bottles, after members told us about the bottle features that were most important to them.
This summer, members joined in to share the food that they enjoyed with their favourite Co-op wines and tell us what they thought about wine and food pairing recommendations more generally. From this we developed our ‘Buyer recommends’ monthly promotion, which features a Co-op buyer sharing their expertise to suggest a food match for the selected bottle of wine.
And as a little ‘thank you’ I’ve put together a short video to share a few ideas about the wines that will bring out the best in your Christmas dinner – from the Chablis that will work wonders with your smoked salmon to the sherry that will completely transform your mince pies and Christmas pud.
Watch out early next year for changes that we’re also making to how we talk about our wine on shelf labels in our stores – all of which have been inspired by members who joined in in April. From their feedback, we’ve been able to create a new design, which we now know will better meet members’ needs and we’re going to trial it in 60 stores.
In the meantime, don’t miss out on other opportunities to join in with your Co-op. Head to your member account to see what’s available right now.
